OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In 1993, SACDC led a transformative expansion of Market Square, more than doubling the number of businesses and ensuring its long-term sustainability. Partnering with the City of San Antonio, market merchants, and private property owners, SACDC spearheaded the last major growth initiative for this iconic marketplace.

The expansion brought lasting benefits to the city, including increased employment, new opportunities for small, minority, and women-owned businesses, and a strengthened cultural presence as San Antonio’s third most popular tourist attraction. Market Square remains a beloved festival venue and cultural landmark for local residents and visitors alike.

For the first time in its history, Market Square became a self-sustaining enterprise, supporting a thriving community of merchants. SACDC continues to provide guidance and support to the Market Merchants Association, ensuring its continued success and growth.

SMALL BUSINESS INCUBATOR

From 1992 to 1995, SACDC operated a small business incubator on San Antonio’s Eastside in partnership with St. Philip’s College, a historically Black institution, and with support from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Through this initiative, over 168 entrepreneurs received business assistance, resulting in the creation of 100 permanent jobs—75% of which benefited low-income individuals.

Building on this success, SACDC continued its efforts into 1995 and 1996, exceeding expectations by assisting 142 additional program participants, three times more than projected.

The incubator provided a wide range of business development services, including software training, one-on-one consulting, operational support, financial planning, and business strategy guidance.

Throughout these years, SACDC successfully met all financial and compliance reporting requirements for federal and private funding agencies, ensuring transparency and accountability. These efforts reinforced its commitment to fostering economic growth and opportunity within underserved communities.
